Technically, this isn’t a photo app. But it’s fun and has fantastic filters so that counts, right? Of course it does! Notica – Your Visual Memory Companion by Cleversome (yes the name is a bit hefty but so are the options so hang in there).
This app is marketed for visually keeping track of things you want to remember. It only takes a small step out of this box to see the lip-smacking goodies this little app offers your photographic journey, including saving the location, jotting down a note and best of all, filters and sharing in the forms of note ‘cards’ which you can group into categories.
Using Notica for iPhone
Create cards to remember a fun date or a cool store. Build a group of cards for a collection or a wish list. The date, time and location are automatically added. Jot down a line or two (there are 6 fonts available), take a picture from within the app or choose from the camera roll, apply one of 35 filters (or just use the original) by clicking on the color wheel to the right of the picture and click save. (Tip: Choose camera roll auto-save and resolution options by clicking on the i button.
Once a card is created, you can share your card via Facebook, Tumblr, Twitter or email. You can also save the card or just the photo to the camera roll. (Tip: Create a card just to use one of the cool filters. Sure it’s a few extra steps but you can delete the card later and, well, filters people!
The first thing I do when I find a cool place or hang out with friends is open this app and create a card. I have a ‘Places’ group to hold those fun places I’ve been, such as the Deep Ellum Arts Festival. I also have a ‘Memories’ group for capturing a fun activity. And if I goof up or save a card to the wrong group? No worries. Cards are easily edited (click edit) or moved (click the yellow down arrow) then click the blue stack button. (Tip: The green button is for sharing.)
Finding Stuff with Notica
All text is searchable so it’s easy to find your notes. The grouping features makes organization a breeze. You can view locations on the card or in the maps app, making it easy to return to the location you stumbled upon. And did I happen to mention you can take video in lieu of photos? (Come on, you know that is super cool.)
There are a few quirks in this app such as you can only see a few lines of your text note if you save the card (you can view all text if you are within the app and click on the yellow down arrow), the inability to edit the default general card (if you don’t have your own groups then your cards will default to this one) and no option to auto save the filtered picture.
Overall, this app is sleek and substantial. It packs a lot of options, creates a journal/diary for you with minimal effort and is a joy to use (and share). You’ll quickly find a place for it on your home screen. Start creating your own Visual Memories and sneaking through the backdoor to apply filters to your photos with Notica (Currently $1.99).
About Marsha Bezzina
Marsha Bezzina has always enjoyed writing. But photography was mostly relegated to annual trips until the acquisition of her first smartphone, the iPhone 4s. Now this self-declared ‘mental crafter’ is a data hog – capturing moments, hoarding photo apps and editing with abandon. She is @notDelilah on Instagram but had to settle for @notDelilah_ on Twitter.
